“You may find plenty of quail hunting operations scattered across Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, and elsewhere, but you will not find the number of properties and the quality of habitat that exist in Thomasville and the surrounding North Florida-Georgia plantation belt. Thanks to the highest concentration of well-maintained bird hunting plantations in the South outside of Texas, Thomasville has been able to preserve traditional bird hunting in unrivaled scale and quality.”

The best Northern Bobwhite hunting in the world.

Between Tallahassee, Florida, and Thomasville, Georgia, about 80 quail hunting plantations—most with roots that reach back to the Gilded Age—comprise 300,000 acres of rolling open pinewood savannas, carpets of golden wiregrass, ancient lakes, and river swamp. This landscape seems lifted from another time.” – T. Edward Nickens, Audubon.org

“It is also interesting to note that it was during the decades of the 1870s and 1880s that modern quail hunting became possible and popular for it was during this period that the modern shotgun was developed. Breech-loading, hammerless, self-ejecting, choke-bored guns using smokeless powders replaced muzzle-loading guns.”

Pebble Hill Plantation

Pebble Hill is a former private sporting estate that embodies the rich quail hunting traditions of the Red Hills region. Originally a working plantation, it was transformed in the late 19th century by the Hanna family into a premier winter retreat designed around field sports. The estate preserved longleaf pine forests ideal for quail hunting and was outfitted with kennels, stables, and other facilities to support an active outdoor lifestyle.

A defining feature of Pebble Hill is its remarkable sporting art collection, one of the largest of its kind in the United States. Paintings, prints, and sculpture throughout the house and galleries celebrate the sporting life, depicting quail, wild turkey, waterfowl, foxhunting, and hunting dogs. Together, the estate and its collections capture not only the experience of the hunt but also the beauty of the landscapes, gamebirds, and animals central to sporting culture.

Elisabeth “Pansy” Ireland Poe, the last owner, carried on Pebble Hill’s traditions of quail hunting and collecting, expanding the art holdings and maintaining the estate’s role as a hub for field sports. Upon her death in 1978, she ensured Pebble Hill would become a public museum. Today, it remains the only historic quail hunting plantation in Georgia open to the public for touring.  It offers visitors a rare look at both the sporting lifestyle and the art it inspired.
